Dogs

Every week we have a wide variety of dogs/puppies up for adoption. The dogs have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, and are microchipped. Please go to our FAQ page to learn about our adoption fees, adoption requirements, policies, how to adopt, as well as other things to consider before you adopt.

.
.
.
.
.

A pre-adoption questionnaire must be filled out by all prospective adopters for each dog you are interested in. You can fill out the pre-adoption questionnaire down below(faster option) or you may complete one at an adoption event. Our pet adoptions are held every Saturday from 11:00am – 3pm. If you would like to inquire about our animals (besides coming to our pet adoption) you may contact us via email. Please keep in mind that we are volunteers and have families and jobs but we will respond to your email as quickly as possible, especially if it is an emergency. All HB dogs, unless otherwise noted, are indoor dogs.

A word about ages: We do our best to accurately represent the ages of the dogs in our program. Sometimes we have good information on that, many times we do not. Working with sending shelters, our experience, and our vet we strive to make our “best guess.” There may be times when paperwork will not match what we’ve stated. Sometimes the birthday may be miss keyed in paperwork from the sending shelter such as a dog that is obviously an adult whose paperwork states they are 18 days old or a puppy who is listed as being three years old. In addition, many dogs that come into rescue have not had the highest quality diet and their teeth may appear “older” than they really are. Sometimes it may be a difference in opinion. Sometimes it may be an error in communication. While we try to be accurate we cannot offer a guarantee on an animal’s age.

HB Ages

Foster Homes Needed: We are always looking for new foster homes. If you have ever wanted to help, now is the time! To learn more about fostering, please go to our Foster Facts page. The dogs (and cats!) thank you for considering becoming a foster mom, dad or family!

Homeward Bound encourages people who plan to visit the adoption events to complete the online application below, prior to the event, so you are approved if you find a match for you there. Prior approval of applications is needed to take a dog home from the event.

Pre-adopt Questionnaire

Name: Adira

Adira is an adorable 3-4year old border collie/ lab mix. This girl has the perfect amount of energy. If you’re looking for a dog that just chills in the house one day and is up for a hike or adventure the next day, this is your dog. Adira would be a great running buddy. She also loves to play fetch with a tennis ball. I’m pretty sure she would play fetch all day long if we let her. She does like to play with other dogs but can be a little bossy sometimes. She ignores the cats in her foster home. Adira would be best in a home with older kids as she does have some energy that might be a little much for younger kids. She is also potty trained and crate trained. Adira was previously from a shelter in Mexico. She’s not quite sure how to just be a dog, and it’s a joy watching her learn how to run and play, come for pets, and soak up affection. With some love, socialization, and training Adira will learn that life as a dog can be amazing!  Please email [email protected]

Name: AJ

AJ is an adult female medium size dog, around 40 pounds, who is an ideal family dog or first time dog. She isn’t perfect, but she gets along well with everyone, works hard to please her people, and is very smart. She is doing really well with house training, crates when alone, and loves walks. She’s average energy. AJ is respectful of cats and enjoys other dogs. Please email [email protected] with questions

.

Name: Atticus

Atticus is a quirky, funny, affectionate 4-5year old lab/ cattle dog mix. Life has not been kind to this sweet boy. Atticus came into a shelter in Mexico about 2 years ago with pellets in his body from being shot, a broken pelvis that had healed up on its own, and was also tied up outside as a puppy and now has a little scar on his neck. Now that Atticus has recovered from his injuries he is so loving and playful. He is quite the resilient dog! For almost half his life he has only known what it’s like to be in a shelter. At his foster home, he is learning how to be in a house and how to be a dog. He is so unsure of how to play with other dogs, he really tries to but it’s a little awkward. We sure love watching him learn, and seeing the sparks of joy in his eyes when he plays with us humans is heartwarming. Atticus really wants someone to bond with and love. He would do best in a house with a confident outgoing dog to show him how to be a dog. Atticus is being fostered with dogs and cats. He would do best in a home with older kids who know how to respect a dog’s space because he is a little bit hesitant in his interactions with people. With some love, patience, and training Atticus will know that no one will ever hurt him again. He is working on potty training and he is crate trained. He especially loves having a blanket in his crate.   Please email [email protected]

Name: Bonnie

Bonnie is an adolescent female Beagle/Pointer mix, about 35-40 pounds, who was born in a shelter and has never left it. She is ‘ out of time’ and needs a commitment, but she also requires a home willing to work with a very shy, shut down dog and teach her how to ‘dog’. Ideally, a place with a yard and another dog is ideal. She is crate trained, very gentle and quiet, and has no idea what a home is, or walks, or love. Bonnie needs a place by September 10th. Please email [email protected]

.

Name: Bo

Breed: Terrier Mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male
Size: Medium
Description: Bo is a 9-month old male Terrier mix needing an adopter who has some dog experience. He has shown resource guarding against kids, and thrives in an adult, structured environment. He is house trained, crate trained, minds some commands, and would love a home with someone who can continue training, boundaries, and no kids. He does well with other dogs. Please email Katie @ [email protected] with questions. You can get a head start on the process by fill out the application above.

Name: Bowie

Breed: Beagle
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male
Size: Medium
Description: Bowie is a Beagle with some baggage. Cute as can be, this young adult Beagle has a lot of Beagle traits (the bay, the enthusiasm for long sniffing walks, the passion for food, and wily smarts) but came to us with some serious resource guarding issues. He went through behavior rehab and is doing wonderfully, but without an experienced dog owner will revert back. He used to guard food, items he thought were his, and his sleeping space, and would react with a bite. At this point, in foster care, he allows us to handle him all over, take food and treats away, and move him. He needs an experienced owner to continue boundaries, training, and kind firmness. We adore him, we have no issues right now (except with cats, he hates cats). Bowie is house trained, crated when alone, loves walks, would do best with a fenced outside area, and we are highly recommending continued training classes. Please email Katie @ [email protected] with questions. You can get a head start on the process by filling out the application above.

.

.

Name: Cabo

Cabo is an adult male German Shepherd with a very easy going, mellow, polite nature. He is reliably house trained, crates when alone, walks politely on the leash and rarely barks– but when he does, it sounds very scary. He loves having the yard space to roam a bit and if he lives in the city, needs a daily walk. Cabo will chase cats so needs a cat free home, and does well with other dogs. He isn’t a personality who would love the dog park, but he sure would love rural living. He is not suited for apartment life. Please email [email protected]

.

.

.

.

Name: Callie

Callie is a female adult mixed breed, looks to be a Lab mix, about 45 pounds. Callie has spent her life chained to a trailer watching the world go by, and now it’s her turn to have a life where she is treated well and cared about. Callie loves all people and does very well with other dogs. She has no cat experience. She spent a few days in a home while she was being spayed, and had no accidents, and was crated when alone. She is used to more of a rural setting, so a home with a yard would be wonderful for her. Callie deserves a home so badly with someone to cherish her. Please email [email protected]

.

.

.

Name: Coco

Coco is an adult dog, a very social, outgoing, affectionate Rat Terrier/Doxie? mix, about 15 pounds. He is friendly with all people, used to kids, good with other dogs and cats. Coco was previously an outside dog and although we know he is just learning the house training, he is doing amazing– VERY few accidents and he is reliably crate trained. Coco is a medium energy dog who loves walks and also loves hanging out at home. His fee of $550 includes neuter, shots, worming, heartworm test, and chip. Please do the application at https://forms.gle/tiYMYnKnGQQotgJz5

.

Name: Cody
Cody is a sweet, polite, 3-year-old, 11 pound Chihuahua mix. He enjoys playing with smaller dogs that aren’t too aggressive and gets along well with cats and children, although would be more comfortable in a home with older children. Cody is quite shy and needs love and patience while he builds his confidence. He is doing well with house training, and crates when alone. Cody would really love a patient adopter with a calm home. Please email [email protected]

.

.

.

Name: Darci

Darci is a very snuggly, loving, 35-pound Australian Shepherd mix about 10 months old seeking a home willing to help her build some confidence. She has made big strides in confidence since arriving from Oklahoma but is still very cautious and will continue to grow with a caring family of her own. She’s a homebody, happiest right now with her own home and yard, though she does well on leashed walks around the neighborhood and is a great quiet coffee shop companion.  Darci will cautiously approach new people and hope for gentle pets. Women seem to gain her trust more quickly than men. She has been nervous around men who approach too quickly so she will need a calm and patient man to help her learn to trust.  She will likely never be an outgoing social butterfly. She likes calm and quiet and predictable. Darci is doing well with house training and is left in a bedroom  or crate when alone. She has always lived with another dog so a home with another canine is ideal, and she is fine with cats. Please email [email protected]

.

.

Name:  Diesel

Diesel is a 5 year old, 40 pound mixed breed his caretaker affectionately calls a ‘ mini Rottweiler’. He is a gentle, mellow guy, well behaved in the house, enjoys walks, and has a very calm and patient demeanor. Diesel is in need of a new home due to a move. He is good with visiting kids but has lived in an adult home, and greets other dogs politely on walks. Please email [email protected]

.

.

Name: Dharma

Dharma is an adolescent female mixed breed who came to us from Mexico, and this sweet, gentle, somewhat shy girl is a joy to watch learning to trust. She seems to perhaps be Lab and Shepherd, probably with a million other things mixed in, and she is such a soft and sweet soul. Dharma is fostered with kids and other dogs, and is very respectful of cats also. She needs some confidence building, some life experiences and a lot of love, and she is worth the extra time at the beginning. Dharma is learning house training, crates when alone, and would do best with a fenced in yard and another dog in her home. She is available for a 2 week trial, and her fee includes spay, shots, heartworm test, worming and chip. Please email [email protected]

.

.

.

Name: Electra

Electra is a 12-16 week female Lab mix puppy who is the living breathing example of joy… she is always wagging and kissing and making friends. Electra is picking up on the house training quickly, and makes instant friends with every dog and human she meets. She also likes cats ( but will try to wrestle them like a puppy). Electra is a very bright, responsive, loving dog and is going to make such a wonderful addition. We don’t typically place large breed puppies in apartments without strong exercise and training plans. Please do the application at

.

Name: Ginny

Ginny is a senior female Schnauzer with attitude seeking a more rural home where she can bark at the wind, not have a lot of visitors to figure out, and can spend hour after hour curled up with her owner inside. We don’t know Ginny’s past, but she’s an odd dog. She is house trained, crate trained, loves walks, but loves to bark at everyone while on walks. She doesn’t bark inside that often, just on her walks. She also thinks she wants pets but then grabs people’s hands when they are done. Ginny is hoping for a single dog home, her feistiness means she doesn’t share space well. If you have space in your heart and home for a quirky, silly, loving little Terrier, please email [email protected]

Name: Gus

Meet Gus! Poor Gus has had a bit of a rough start to life. Gus found himself at a high kill shelter with his brother at a very young age. Thankfully, they were rescued from there and made their way to Minnesota. Unfortunately, following his neuter, he suffered an extremely rare, but severe complication and to say him being here is a miracle, is an understatement. But boy does this guy have a zest for life. After a life saving emergency surgery that resulted in him losing a section of his intestine, he went on to recover with remarkable strength. He hardly missed a beat. Now, several weeks later and fully recovered, this boy is ready to find a home that will show him nothing but the best. He should have no lasting  complications from the surgery. Gus is searching for an active family who is looking for an energetic dog to take on hikes, go on adventures with, go swimming and play fetch with. He loves everyone he meets and wiggles his way into the hearts of everyone who crosses his path. Gus would love a home with a big yard, a family with lots of love to give, and another dog to play and wrestle with. He is incredibly smart and eager to learn. Gus is well-started on house breaking and is used to be crated at night. He is fostered with kids, other dogs, and cats and loves everyone. Gus needs a family who is up for everything a puppy has to offer (playing, wrestling, teething, chewing, jumping), and someone who will put in the time and effort to help him reach his full potential. Gus’ fee of $550 plus tax covers neuter, shots, worming, and chip. Please email [email protected] with questions. Please fill out the application at https://forms.gle/tiYMYnKnGQQotgJz5

.

Name: Jethro

Breed: Beagle/Hound Dog Mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male
Size: Medium
Description: Jethro was found in a rural area, known for dumping and not reclaimed. He deserves so much more than this. He looks like a mix of a beagle and hound dog. He is the sweetest, always happy and gets along well with everyone. In typical hound fashion, he does bark some, but its only for attention or when its feeding time. He walks well on a leash. His nose leads the way when loose, so recall is not great- a fenced yard or commitment to walks is needed. He gets along with all dogs, and has been good with the 2 children ages 5 & 8 he is living with. He was fine inside meeting kittens, but outside he will chase cats. Jethro is about 2-3 yrs. old, 40lbs, neutered, heartworm treated and on prevention. He is available to adopt August 6th. His fee of $450 plus tax covers neuter, heartworm test, worming, shots and chip. Ideally we would like someone to pick him up the 6th and do a 2 week foster to adopt trial. Please email Katie @ [email protected] with questions. You can get a head start on the process by fill out the application above.

Name: Larry

Larry is a 9 month Chihuahua/Doxie/Pug mix, a gentle soul who is a little cautious at first but warms up quickly. He likes other dogs and cats, greets people politely, and is doing well with house training. Larry crates for the workday. He is a finicky eater, but his foster likes to spoil him with treats too. Larry would love a home with someone who likes Chihuahuas and appreciates a sweet little dog. He is available September 24th, and you can do the application at https://forms.gle/tiYMYnKnGQQotgJz5

Name: Luka

Luka is a young adult male Pug/Rat Terrier mix, a blonde guy with a bob tail, about 15 pounds. Luka is a puzzle… he is shy at first, then bonds to you so hard and is a high energy, bouncy, active love. He for sure needs a home with yard space and a high activity level for him, and no shared walls ( he barks). Luka is doing well with house training and crates well when alone. He enjoys other dogs and is fine with cats. Please email [email protected]

Name: Louisa

Breed: Beagle/Boxer/Shar Pei Mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female
Size: Medium
Description: Louisa is a young adult female medium size (35-40 or so pounds) Beagle/Boxer/Shar Pei mix, and we have been learning her and loving her for the past few months. Louisa was rescued from a hoarding situation and gave birth in the shelter on Easter Sunday to some beautiful pups. She and the babies came into foster care and she has been blossoming. Louise is cautious with new people but with a little time and patience easily won over, and her loyalty is unbeatable to those she loves. She is dog and cat friendly, used to caged guinea pigs, reliably house trained and quiet in the crate when alone. Louisa LOVES daily run time on the hobby farm and is good about coming back right when called. She likes the car. Louisa is especially cautious with men and young kids, so her ideal home would be a woman, a fenced yard, and another dog to wrestle and play with, or somewhere with some land. For the person/family willing to make the time and patience investment, she is going to spend every day for the rest of her life repaying it. Please email Katie @ [email protected] with questions. You can get a head start on the process by fill out the application above.

MaylieName: Maylie

Breed: Australian Shepherd/Border Collie Mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female
Size: Medium
Description: Meet Maylie! Maylie is a 1-2 year old Australian Shepherd mix who is searching for that just right family to call her own. Maylie found herself in a rural, high kill shelter, skinny and emaciated, and caring for her two young pups (they have since been adopted). Since then, Maylie has blossomed in her foster home, put on a good amount of weight, and has learned all the great things life as a family pet has to offer. Maylie is slow to warm up to new people and dogs, it takes time and patience for her to trust. Once she does trust you though, you will have a loyal and devoted protector. Maylie requires a home with a physically fenced yard and another young, non dominant dog. She spends most of her waking hours running and playing in the yard with the other dogs in her foster home. She is a homebody, and would prefer a family who is the same. She is not going to be the kind of dog who likes going to dog parks, or on walks in populated areas. She has no interest in fetch or sports and just wants to play with the other dogs and her people, and cuddle up on the couch for a good movie night. Maylie needs someone fairly experienced in training dogs. She does have some resource guarding issues with other dogs (likely due to not having many promised meals in her life prior to coming to us) and needs to be fed separately from the other dogs, and supervised with bones. Maylie loves visiting kids, but would do best in a home with older, well mannered children. Maylie is fostered with cats and does well. She is a herding dog, so she will chase them if they run.
Her fee of $450 plus tax covers spay, shots, heartworm test, worming and microchip. We do a 2-week trial on all adoptions. Please email Linzy @ [email protected] with questions. You can get a head start on the process by fill out the application here

Name: Milton

Milton is a 5-6 year old mixed breed ( probably German Shepherd mix) with one of the most unflappably easy going personalities ever. He likes everyone– all humans, all dogs, met a cat and was respectful. He just loves life and every living thing so far. Milton seems to be house trained ( his foster is very experienced), crates when alone, and is a pleasure to take for walks and spend time with. He is available September 10th for a 2 week trial, and his fee includes neuter, shots, heartworm test, worming and chip. Please email [email protected]

Name: Odie

Odie is a 3-4 year old, 35 pound male mixed breed seeking a calmer home who wants a homebody dog. Previously an unclaimed stray in St. Paul, he came with a lot of bonuses… house trained, not a chewer, rarely barks, very affectionate. He also has some insecurities that show in the form of being too protective of his home/people. He is seeking someone who doesn’t have a lot of company over, and is willing to crate him when people do come inside. He’s the perfect companion dog, he loves walks and attention and hanging out at home. He’s also a ball/fetch player, and loves it. If you have some experience working with a dog who gets protective, and have the ability to put him away when others visit, he’s wonderful in every other way. He does fine with other people out and about, great at the vet and the park, just not great with strangers coming into his home. Please email [email protected]

.

Name: Penn

Penn is lower key energy wise, he likes playing outside but is overall an extremely mellow puppy.  Expect routine puppy training to continue, but he works harder than any puppy we know to do the right thing. We don’t typically place large breed puppies in apartments without strong exercise and training plans. Please do the application at

Name: Sonic

Sonic is a young adult Lab mix, a pretty big solid guy who LOVES to play. He will turn anything into a game. That roll of paper towels? Confetti. That ball you threw? He will grab it, run circles around you, and toss it back. Other dogs? Instant friends, no matter if they want to be or not. He is too enthusiastic for cats, he bowls them over in his play. He is the happiest dog we have ever met, and is all about having fun. He is very puppyish still, so needs an adopter willing to continue puppy training a big full grown dog. He is doing very well with house training, but not yet 100%- previously outside dog- and crates when alone. Sonic would thrive in a home with a fenced yard or land, another active dog, and someone to work on obedience with a very enthusiastic learner. He is joy in canine form.
